Romantic Volume

Spring 2027 RTW Fashion Trend

After several seasons in which restraint became something of an aesthetic ideal, Spring 2027 saw designers rediscover the pleasure of taking up space. Skirts ballooned outward, exaggerated hips recalled the proportions of historical dress, and layers of delicate fabric created silhouettes that seemed to float around the body. There was a renewed sense of romance to these shapes, drawing upon centuries-old ideas of femininity while allowing for a degree of playfulness and experimentation that felt distinctly contemporary.

At Dior, Jonathan Anderson offered one of the season’s most compelling interpretations, revisiting the house’s historic silhouettes through weightless layers of chiffon and organza. The familiar fullness of Christian Dior’s original designs was softened into something far more fluid, retaining their sense of occasion while shedding much of their formality. Simone Rocha took a more sculptural approach, manipulating taffeta into voluminous, almost architectural forms, while Erdem’s references to historical dress brought an element of theatricality to the runway. Elsewhere, Chloé and Loewe explored the possibilities of exaggerated proportions, demonstrating just how varied the expression of volume could be.

There’s something particularly interesting about this return to romanticism at a moment when so much of contemporary life is shaped by efficiency, practicality, and an increasingly digital experience of the world. Fashion’s renewed interest in exaggerated silhouettes suggests a desire for something more expressive, where craftsmanship, movement, and the physical presence of clothing become part of its appeal. For an industry working to restore a sense of emotional connection with its customers, that shift feels particularly relevant. The appeal of these garments extends beyond their visual impact to the imagination and artistry they represent.

Of course, the more extravagant expressions of this trend will remain largely within the realm of runway fantasy. Yet its broader influence is already evident in the softer balloon hems, fuller skirts, and sculptural dresses that offer a more approachable interpretation. Perhaps that’s what makes romantic volume especially compelling this season: the possibility of bringing a little of fashion’s imaginative spirit into everyday dressing, without losing the sense of wonder that makes it desirable in the first place.
