Texture and Touch
For Taakk’s Takuya Morikawa, the nuanced approach of reinterpreting rather than directly adopting foreign influences remains a cornerstone of his creative ethos. This philosophy echoes the groundbreaking approach of Japan’s fashion vanguard in the ’80s and ’90s, which Morikawa aims to continue.
Morikawa’s expertise in textile innovation shone brightly this season with a display of gradient woven fabrics, ranging from airy voiles to lightweight wools, and a striking lace-effect mesh achieved by overlaying a printed motif on a weave with plant-based solvents.
The collection featured fresh takes on his 3D embroideries, employing strips cut from the same fabrics as the garments themselves. These techniques were applied to Western menswear essentials—such as roomy wide-leg trousers, tailored shorts, and breezy short-sleeve shirts—that have become staples in Japanese fashion since the country’s Western-influenced modernization in the late 19th century.
The color palette featured pearl grays, greenish blues, and sophisticated pinks, punctuated by occasional floral prints, all contributing to a breezy, resort-like ambiance. Black and white were cleverly used in sheer materials, softening their overall impact.
Standouts included jackets that seamlessly transitioned into translucent shirts at the chest or sleeves and loosely cut jeans in a variegated weave. Subtle yet discernible were the traditional Japanese influences in the design details, such as the width and darts of trousers, the proportions of jackets, and the elegant curvature of collars.
