Spring 2023 Ad Campaign

Closed Spring 2023 Ad Campaign with Photographer Jonas Unger featuring models Mariana Santana and Cheikh Dia.

The Closed Women’s Spring 2023 collection is inspired by two artists: Barbara Hepworth and Katharina Grosse.

Dame Barbara Hepworth was an English artist and sculptor whose work exemplifies modernism, combining organic forms with natural materials. The marble and stone textures involved in her pieces inspired the collection’s fabrics and denim washes, while aged bronze is an inspiration for the base colours. Closed’s Spring 2023 first drop is inspired by Britishness, exploring the classic signature pieces of British dressing and sportswear, inspired by the way Barbara Hepworth often looked to the British landscape for her own inspiration. Katharina Grosse is a contemporary painter from Germany. Her expansive works are multidimensional pictorial worlds in which walls, ceilings or entire buildings and landscapes are sprayed with bright colours. Her style is bold, colourful and kaleidoscopic. Closed uses her sense of colour for bold highlights of raspberry pink and patina green as splashes of colour in the collection, or as diagonal and haphazard stripes.

Marble washes reminiscent of Hepworth sculptures are seen head to toe in the most modern of denim suits, relaxed and cool, with a sporty edge. Handcraft details appear on luxury leather, subtle crochet seaming in elegant elderflower. The utility suit in grey marble is something that maybe Hepworth would have loved to wear in her studio – a fluid, easy look with sporty zip detail. The statement print of the season comes in a heavy cotton twill with beautiful artwork inspired by one of Hepworth’s most famous sculptures, The Wave. Diagonal stripes are seen in T-shirts for a nonchalant attitude, or luxury silk blends for a feminine silhouette – inspired by the haphazard work of Katharina Grosse’s paintings. Base colours of grey marble and washed black are freshened up with lashings of white. Colours of the season are elderflower and mulberry straight from the British countryside, and for a highlight, green patina inspired by the work of Katharina Grosse.

Base colours of grey alabaster and brown marble, reminiscent of Hepworth’s sculptures, are pre-sented with a good dose of classic black, lifted up with the fashion colours of light orchid, darkraisin and splashes of raspberry pink inspired by the works of Katahrina Grosse.

The Closed Men’s Spring 2023 collection looks into the contrast between sculpture and activity. It’s about an energy-infusing start to the new season. Two sculptors, previously mentioned, also inspired the collection: the British artist Barbara Hepworth (1903-75) and the American sculptor Walter De Maria (1935-2013). While Hepworth’s abstract work was inspired by nature, De Maria has a more conceptual and spiritual approach. Both artists, although from different periods, share a deep love for stone and its endless possibilities. Whether Barbara Hepworth’s single standing sculptures or De Maria’s installations of multiple sculptures: their use of colour and choice of surfaces were utterly important in the design process.

Next to this apparent static approach, Closed opened the collection to activity – picking up on dynamic aspects, contrasts in colours and materials, new silhouettes and active fabrics. The choice of colours derives from the world of stones, mimicking the sculptor’s materials. Lunar rock, graphite and African sand create a great base, while marble white and marl stone add lighter shades. Dark jade brings newness as a new cool base. Highlights are royal azure and cornelian brown – dynamic precious stone shades. Denim is important in all shades of blue. Closed widens the range of blue from light to dark. Washes are mainly inspired by real lived-in denim garments, which is a contrast to the cleaner surfaces used in other fabrics. Next to all the blues, new denim shades from grey to green and white add freshness.

A very new aspect is the casual sporty pieces – like technical track pants, finding their way into everyday dressing. Sweats and jerseys mirror the sculptural approach of the collection as elevated essentials in heavy cotton qualities with dusty shaded surfaces.

Utility stays in focus. Masculine, functional basics such as trench coats, parkas and bomber jackets are revisited and combined in a youthful way. Patterns are important in all categories, especially checks in all shapes, even unusual checkerboards and stripes. The Closed logo is approached more playfully and presented in a new seasonal presentation. Closed’s very own positive energy is bundled in this collection.
