Review of Louis Vuitton Spring 2023 Ad Campaign by Photographer David Sims and Art Director Edward Quarmby with models Hoyeon Jung, Elio Berenett, Franziska Jetzek, Greta Oberwalleney, Kilian Smits, Samile Bermannelli, Sarah Brown, and Tommy Solovyov
Louis Vuitton playfully explores scale and perspective with its new women’s campaign for Spring 2023. The campaign was shot by photographer David Sims with art direction by Edward Quarmby.
Continuing to play with the idea of exaggerated proportions and oversized details – as well as leaning into its more literal dollhouse bag – that characterize Nicolas Ghesquière’s design work for the collection, the campaign imagery sees its models pose in front of a series of large dollhouses – or perhaps small real houses? The beige and off-white tones of the backdrop provide a neutrally colored yet spatially intriguing canvas for the playfully chic character of the styling, while the cast of models led by actor and brand ambassador Hoyeon Jung bring an energy of composed cool.
The accompanying short film further blurs the sense of scale. The stars reach in and out of the houses, while other shots situate the viewer looking out from their windows at the giant world beyond.
The campaign is conceptually simple, but smartly digs into its visual conceit to find many playful and striking moments. It also nicely responds to the attitude of the collection, which finds unexpected creative moments by resizing and reimagining small, everyday details. It’s another strong example of Louis Vuitton’s and Ghesquière’s potent practice of using the classic language of Parisian fashion to create a perspective that is uplifting and new.
