Thom Browne, with an introduction by Andrew Bolton

Thom Browne and Phaidon announced the first book on Thom Browne, which will be released in October 2023.

Published on the 20th anniversary of the company in Fall 2023, this comprehensive monograph will celebrate the originality and lasting impact of the award-winning American fashion designer’s work through specially commissioned photography featuring looks from his collections, as well as exclusive images of his theatrical and thought- provoking shows.

The book is organized chronologically, featuring newly commissioned photography by celebrated British photographer Johnny Dufort and curated by Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu curator in charge at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York. Bolton is the creative director of this title, and his text serves as an entreìe into Browne’s world, examining the trajectory of the brand and its iconic design philosophy. A series of images of past runway shows – some never-before-seen – are included in the final chapters of the book.

Designed by Irma Boom, an Amsterdam-based graphic designer widely recognized as one of the world’s most inventive and experimental book designers, the monograph reflects the well- known graphic designer’s architectural approach to bookmaking and the fashion designer’s remarkable vision. Over two hundred images of modeled runway looks, across both menswear and women’s, are presented across more than 400 pages. With over forty gatefolds throughout, the monograph features select images horizontally to draw attention to details at a larger scale. Each page of the curated albums of runway shows is separated by an elegant vellum paper, as seen in traditional photo albums, which adds an atmosphere of intimacy, mystery, and ready-made history; the book itself is a performance. The backmatter will feature descriptive captions that correspond to the more than 200 looks featured in the plates section.

Thom Browne is recognized worldwide for modernizing today’s professional uniform: the suit. He reimagines traditional proportions with hyper-detailed tailoring in precise and yet sometimes surreal ways. His celebrity clientele includes Cardi B, Michelle Obama, LeBron James, and Julia Roberts, among others.

When Browne began making clothes in 2003, he was initially celebrated for his distinctive approach to menswear with trademark blue, gray, and white looks, each featuring a distinctive, strict, tight-fitting silhouette, most of them carrying the label’s signature three-striped marking. The brand expanded in 2011 to include ready-to-wear and accessories for women.

Created in close collaboration with Browne and Bolton, the book is as desirable an object as Browne’s coveted designs, featuring specially commissioned photography of runway looks from all of Browne’s seasons and archival images highlighting his highly conceptual collection presentations. This is a must-have for any Thom Browne fan.

Enclosed in a clamshell box, the book includes more than 40 gatefolds and translucent vellum pages featuring the brand’s signature four stripes. It also includes a Thom Browne grosgrain ribbon, provided by the designer. A luxury edition of the book, held in a silver box, will also be available.
