Dolce & Gabbana gets back to its roots and evokes cinematic Sicilian glamor with a new Spring 2024 campaign by creative director Fabien Baron and photographer Steven Meisel.

Diving fully into the house’s Italian heritage, the campaign draws on the visual language of classic Italian cinema and the elegant old-world charm of Sicily. Meisel’s monochrome compositions exude a nostalgic sophistication, deepening the sense of classically curated poise of the collection’s pinstripes, polka dots, hat-scarf combos, and simple black silhouettes.

The accompanying short film in particular pushes the cinematic quality, with the video being edited to have the film artifacts and even the sound of a projector as if we were watching a restored historic film in a small arthouse theater. Dusty guitars and violins provide a melodramatic soundtrack, while a cameo from a Sicilian fisherman forms a detail that powerfully deepens the world of the campaign, grounding us in history and culture while alluding to a touch of idealized historical fantasy.

D&G’s recent campaign and design output has seen a wise stripping away of the extraneous elements that had built up over the years, distilling things back to the essence of the brand. This campaign is the most successful and enriching example of that direction yet. Grounded in history yet forming a contemporary fashion fantasy, the campaign is a richly cinematic ode to Sicily that beautifully revives that signature Dolce splendor, drama, and sophistication.
