Review of Chanel Spring 2024 Eyewear Ad Campaign by Creative Director Virginie Viard with Photographer Karim Sadli with models Liu Wen, Loli-Bahia, Alaato Jazyper and América González
Chanel taps into the unquestionable cool of the perfect pair of shades with its Spring 2024 eyewear campaign by photographer Karim Sadli.
Sadli captures a roster of Chanel runway models in direct portraits before a white studio backdrop, emphasizing the character of the eyewear styles and the poise each persona brings to them. The images are laid out in sequence to mimic a contact sheet, creating a kind of self-reflexive meta photographic moment.
The accompanying short film offers a similarly direct consideration of its subject matter. The portraits are put into motion, while off-camera the models reflect on the power of sunglasses as a distinct fashion accessory. Liu Wen, for instance, compares them to “an actual suit of armor,” and says “they let me see without being seen,” while other moments take shape as reflections on the alluring and enduring iconography of the brand.
Focused and striking, the campaign nicely balances the cool visual directness of a slick pair of sunglasses with an introspective consideration of all that is Chanel.
