Faux or Real? It’s Fur Season

Fall 2026 RTW Fashion Trend

There may be bans of the real deal from the BFC and CFDA, but that didn’t stop designers from indulging in chubby, cosy and super-sized shaggy furs for fall. But an effort was made to use shearling as an alternative, as well as hyper-realistic faux versions that would satisfy even the most glamorous of femme fatales. Expect to see long fur coats taking over the sidewalk this winter, and if this years snowstorm at the tail end of fashion week was any indication, heavy layers that the fashion crowd can disappear into will be welcomed.

As climate change becomes an encroaching reality – with warmer, wetter summers and more severe winters – the return of the fur coat makes sense as the investment buy of the season. Vintage styles were favoured at Valentino and Balenciaga, monster fur textures were seen at Etro and Givenchy, and old money minks and sables were resurrected by Dolce and Gabbana and Ermanno Scervino. Designers also had fun with fur. Camo patchworking was a highlight at Fendi, diagonal stripes underlined the retro theme at Mugler, and the fur-wrap will replace the stole from last fall as the fur accessory to watch.
