The Longtime Fast Retailing Executive Succeeds Dinesh Tandon And Will Oversee Theory And Helmut Lang’s Global Operations And Growth
Theory has appointed James Kelly as global chief executive officer, expanding the responsibilities of the executive who has served in senior financial and operational roles at the company since 2022.

Kelly succeeds Dinesh Tandon, who will transition from global CEO to global co-chief operating officer of Theory while returning to his role as chief executive officer of Theory China. The company described the changes as part of a broader alignment of its leadership structure, with Tandon focusing on China, one of the brand’s key growth markets.
As global CEO of Theory and Helmut Lang, Kelly will oversee global headquarters functions, commercial operations and worldwide growth initiatives. He is based at Theory’s global headquarters in New York’s Meatpacking District.
“It is an honor to lead Theory, a brand with an enduring legacy of timeless design, exceptional quality and New York creativity,” Kelly said. “Together with our talented teams, we will continue building on that foundation by delivering exceptional product and experiences for our customers globally.”
Kelly has spent 13 years within Fast Retailing, Theory’s parent company. Before joining Theory, he held several leadership positions at Fast Retailing, including roles supporting Uniqlo’s expansion in North America. He helped scale the Japanese retailer’s early U.S. operations before leading its expansion in Canada.
Kelly joined Theory in 2022 as chief financial officer and subsequently became global co-chief operating officer. His responsibilities have included finance, planning, procurement and business transformation across the U.S., U.K. and Europe, while working to strengthen the company’s direct-to-consumer operations.
“James has been an instrumental leader for Theory over the past several years, bringing strategic vision, operational excellence and a deep understanding of our business,” said Kazumi Yanai, chairman of Theory. “As James assumes the role of Global CEO and Dinesh focuses his leadership on one of our most important markets, we are further expanding our global organization and positioning Theory for continued success around the world.”
The appointment puts an executive with a largely financial, operational and international retail background at the head of Theory as the company looks to develop its direct-to-consumer business and expand across global markets. Kelly’s remit across both Theory and Helmut Lang also brings the two Fast Retailing-owned New York brands under his global executive leadership.
Tandon’s move back to the top role in China gives the market dedicated senior leadership while keeping him involved in Theory’s wider operations as global co-chief operating officer.
The restructuring leaves Kelly responsible for the company’s broader global direction while Tandon concentrates on China, sharpening the division of responsibilities as Theory pursues its next phase of international growth.
