Barrie and Damien Hirst Bring Art to Cashmere

The British artist translates his signature Spots and Butterflies into a limited collection knitted at Barrie’s historic Scottish mill

Barrie is joining forces with British artist Damien Hirst for an exclusive collection translating two of his most recognizable motifs into Scottish cashmere. Launching October 14, the collaboration grew out of Hirst’s longstanding relationship with the Maison as a client and centers on what the artist envisioned as an ideal seven-piece cashmere wardrobe.

Hirst’s Spots and Butterflies provide the collection’s visual language, with Barrie using its knitwear expertise to interpret the motifs while remaining faithful to the principles behind the original artworks. The pieces are knitted at the Maison’s historic mill in Hawick, Scotland, positioning the collaboration as an intersection of Hirst’s established iconography and Barrie’s specialized approach to cashmere.

The core cashmere collection is produced in individually numbered editions of 100 per colorway. Spot motifs appear across a zip-up and round-neck sweater in white with multicolored spots, white with grey spots, and black with multicolored spots. Hirst’s Butterflies cover a coordinating hoodie and trouser set offered in white, black, red, and green, while cashmere blankets arrive in multicolored and white versions.

The collaboration extends beyond those limited pieces with a jersey hoodie, cashmere scarves, cotton T-shirts, and embroidered patches that invite further personalization. A series of Collectibles completes the offering, playfully borrowing from the familiar language of museum-shop souvenirs and further blurring the boundaries between artwork, merchandise, and wardrobe.

It is a fitting framework for an artist whose imagery has long circulated beyond the gallery wall. Rather than simply reproducing Hirst’s motifs on a finished garment, Barrie uses the construction of knitwear itself as the medium, filtering Spots and Butterflies through the material language of cashmere. The result brings the codes of an artist and a historic Scottish mill into unusually tactile alignment.

Barrie + Damien Hirst launches October 14 through Barrie’s website and boutiques across Europe, Korea, and the Americas, followed by China, Japan, and Taiwan on November 10.
