Jonathan Glazer directs Joaquin Phoenix in a cinematic campaign that positions technology as a new medium for human connection
Review of Gentle Monster Fall 2026 Ad Campaign by Creative Director Jonathan Glazer with Talent Joaquin Phoenix
Gentle Monster’s upcoming Intelligent Eyewear collection arrives with a campaign that treats technology less as a product demonstration and more as an invitation into the unknown. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Jonathan Glazer, the teaser film uses the language of psychological cinema to explore the shifting relationship between human perception and technology. In a campaign built around the question of what happens when the familiar becomes unfamiliar, the eyewear has an unusual task: making the inexplicable a little easier to understand.
The story follows Phoenix as a salesman checking into an unfamiliar hotel, where the ordinary quickly gives way to the uncanny. Strange encounters and incomprehensible characters disrupt the environment, while the hotel itself becomes an increasingly unstable setting between dream and reality. A corridor illuminated by red light provides the film’s central turning point, as Phoenix’s character begins communicating with mysterious entities through the intelligent eyewear. The premise gives the product a narrative purpose, placing it within an experience of discovery rather than isolating it in conventional product-focused imagery.
Glazer’s direction is particularly suited to this territory. Known for an approach that favors atmosphere, ambiguity, and carefully controlled tension, he transforms an otherwise recognizable hotel into a space of quiet disorientation. The pacing and surreal humor allow the film to move between unease and amusement without explaining every detail. Phoenix, meanwhile, gives the salesman a restrained, searching presence, allowing bewilderment, curiosity, and apprehension to register through small shifts rather than overt performance. The result is a cinematic world that feels deliberately unresolved, an effective counterpoint to the promise of a device designed to make communication more immediate.
The campaign’s strongest decision is its integration of the eyewear into the narrative. Rather than interrupting the film to enumerate technical features, it presents the product as a tool that expands the character’s ability to interpret and engage with an unfamiliar world. This approach gives intelligent eyewear an emotional and conceptual dimension, connecting its functionality to the broader human desire to understand others. It also reflects Gentle Monster’s established interest in treating eyewear as an object of cultural and visual experimentation, rather than simply an accessory.
There is, however, a delicate balance between the film’s surreal atmosphere and the practical promise of the technology. The teaser establishes intrigue around the possibilities of intelligent eyewear, but leaves much of the collection’s actual functionality unexplored. That restraint makes sense for a first look, particularly when the campaign is designed to build anticipation ahead of the full film and product launch. The next chapter will need to connect the cinematic proposition to the everyday experience of wearing and using the device, translating its imaginative premise into something tangible.
The full campaign film is scheduled for release later this month. Pre-orders for the Gentle Monster Intelligent Eyewear collection open November 12, followed by a public preview in New York from November 13 to 23. Pre-orders and preview registration will be available through the brand’s official website.
Glazer and Phoenix make a compelling case for eyewear as a way of seeing beyond the obvious. Whether the technology can make the everyday feel quite so extraordinary remains the more practical question.
