Swimwear Spring 2022 Ad Campaign

Review of Alaïa Swimwear Spring 2022 Ad Campaign by Director and Photographer Albert Moya with Model Mirthe Dijk

Alaïa celebrates its first swimwear collection with a dreamy and luxuriant campaign by director and photographer Albert Moya.

Designed by creative director Pieter Mulier, the collection is the storied house’s first foray into swimwear. Though new, the collection seeks to pay homage to the house’s design roots, reimagining Azzedine Alaïa’s signature eyelets and open knits, as well as his commitment to celebrate the body.

Taking his cue from this dialogue of wearer, clothing, and viewer, Moya’s campaign explores these themes through an aquatic mood of luxury and subtle sensuality.

Lone model Mirthe Dijk swims through the blue waters of a pool in a sunlit tropical paradise. Though enough is still left up to the imagination, the imagery – beautifully shot on analogue film – suggests partial nudity, seeing the body through layers of water, swimwear worn or not worn, and distorted light.

Expressing the house’s core design values while still moving its ideas forward, the campaign is a simply elegant way to explore swimwear’s unique role in seeing and being seen.
