The Fall 2024 Capsule Highlights Both Brands’ Connection to Northern England and British Subcultures
In a nod to their shared heritage and timeless appeal, British brands Baracuta and Barbour are expanding their collaboration with a new Fall 2024 capsule collection. This latest offering is a tribute to the Northern spirit that both brands embody and their legacy of crafting durable, stylish outerwear designed to brave the elements.
The collection draws inspiration from the enduring influence of Baracuta’s iconic G9 Harrington Jacket, a staple since the 1950s, embraced by subcultures from Teddy Boys and Mods to Britpop fans. Ian Bergin, Barbour’s Director of Menswear, highlights the thoughtful approach taken in designing this collection. “Carefully melding together the DNA of both brands was key to this collaboration. We wanted to pay tribute to the Northern roots of Barbour and Baracuta, and the people that have worn our jackets over the years,” Bergin said. “As a result, we have paid close attention to the detailing – from trims and hardware to fabrications and cut. I know there are small features that aficionados will pick up on straight away.”
Among the standout pieces, the collaboration includes reimagined classics such as Barbour’s Bedale jacket, originally designed in 1980 for equestrian enthusiasts. The new version blends Baracuta’s unique dog-ear collar with Barbour’s classic silhouette. The G9 Harrington Jacket also gets a fresh update with Barbour’s wax cotton, enhanced by brass metalwork and a two-way ring pull zip. The Mod Casual Parka, a nod to the 1960s Mod movement, is also reinterpreted with military elements and a Britpop aesthetic, featuring a toggle drawstring waist, an oversized hood, and a longline design that makes it both fashionable and practical.
Accessories round out the collection, with items like the Barbour x Baracuta Bucket Hat and Trapper Cap, as well as ribbed wool knitwear and Henley T-shirts that capture the Britpop vibe. A central design highlight of the collection is the fusion of the brands’ signature tartans. Barbour’s House Tartan, created in 1998, and Baracuta’s Fraser Tartan, famously seen in the G9, come together to honor their Scottish roots and British style.
“This is more than just a collaboration; it’s a union of legacies. It’s about shared heritage, craftsmanship, and a deep-rooted British identity,” Baracuta shared. “Manchester and South Shields, the iconic homes of both Baracuta and Barbour, flow through our veins and into our pieces. When you wear a Baracuta x Barbour garment, you’re not just wearing clothes; you’re carrying the message of that pure unparalleled Britishness.”
In a campaign that pays homage to Manchester’s industrial past, the collection is showcased against the city’s Northern Quarter, where Baracuta was established in 1938. With inspiration from the works of English artist L.S. Lowry, the campaign captures the red-brick streets and mill buildings, evoking the cradle of the industrial revolution. Menswear commentator and model Danny Lomas stars in the campaign, embodying the essence of this nostalgic yet modern collaboration.
The Baracuta x Barbour AW24 collection will be available on October 18, 2024, both online and in select stores, offering fans of both brands a chance to own pieces that celebrate their rich legacy, craftsmanship, and the British subcultures that have shaped fashion over the decades.
