Review of Celine ‘Beauté | Le Rouge’ 2024 Ad Campaign by Creative Director & Photographer Hedi Slimane with model Ever Anderson

Celine celebrates the launch of the first-ever cosmetics collection in the house’s history with a campaign that focuses on the ritualistic allure of beauty products and the timeless impact of a red lip. As always, the campaign was shot, directed, and styled by the house’s creative director Hedi Slimane.

The photography side of the simple campaign features still-life imagery of the range of beauty products themselves, seeing the bottles, pencils, stick, and vials like a shimmering cityscape, luxurious totems of the act of making oneself up.

The accompanying video highlights the star rouge lipstick as worn by Ever Anderson, the young actress whom Slimane first lensed in the latest installment of his “Portrait of an Artist” series.

We do wonder if this historic and ambitious push into a highly competitive new product category deserves a bigger and more creative campaign to more fully capture the excitement at this narrative turning point for Celine. It also might be worth asking whether a 16-year-old is the most relatable and inspiring face for the many different women that Celine hopes will invest in its products.

Nonetheless, the imagery does successfully bring the realm of beauty into Slimane’s established visual vernacular of chicly minimal sophistication and stylish moodiness. This new chapter may not have started off with a bang, but the way it did start is undeniably very Celine.
