Rouge Spring 2021 Ad Campaign

Review of Dior Rouge Spring 2021 Beauty Ad Campaign by Creative Directors Robert Lussier & Mia Forsgren of The Style Council & Photographer Inez and Vinoodh with Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman ravishes in rouge in a new beauty campaign from Dior. Creative directors Robert Lussier and Mia Forsgren of The Style Council balance pop sensibility and haute couture clout for the Spring 2021 celebration of Dior’s iconic Rouge lipstick.

The campaign takes a fun note of inspiration from Prince’s iconic 1985 hit “Raspberry Beret,” which makes up the short film’s soundtrack. Portman poses in a beret which perfectly matches the color of her Dior lipstick. The joyous shade is repeated across all the other objects we see, unifying this world into a colorful and singular expression of beauty.

The photography portion of the campaign sees Inez and Vinoodh capture Portman in a series of studio portraits. Continuing to echo the lyrics of the Prince song, she wears only her beret and a matching pair of gloves. It feels important that in the topless photographs Portman is playfully sexy, but not sexualized – she remains in control of her image.

There are few high-level creative agencies in fashion that can produce campaigns for beauty as well as fashion, so we always appreciate seeing the work of The Style Council.

Here they have created a campaign which successfully balances that visual marketing pop with a sense of couture elegance a house like Dior can be proud of.
