The runways of the big four are not often the place to turn for casual wear inspiration, even attempting the DIY grunge aesthetic will result in luxury yarns for crochet and some form of statement trim or embellishment. But the all-round acceptance of denim, as a vehicle for high-low dressing has seen it rise up the ranks to couture-like status. As designers played with patchworking, vintage washes, and distressing, there is an opportunity for them to step into the sustainability conversation by offering recycled, upcycled, and repurposed options. The midi denim skirt (Fendi’s New York outing, and at Diesel) will be the shape to back next summer, as it was seen at the shows and on the streets, while overdyed effects in warmer earthy tones at Ulla Johnson and Max Mara, spoke to retro workwear.
