The Resort Spa Destination Seeks to Combine Ancient Traditions with Cutting-Edge Technology
Hotel Esencia has unveiled the renovation and reopening of its Mayan-inspired spa, now featuring an additional second floor and a sensory deprivation tank. This development comes after the release of a coffee table book by Assouline celebrating the hotel, and the announcement of a new location, Château de Curzay in France.
The spa, a standout feature of the five-star boutique hotel situated on a 50-acre estate formerly owned by an Italian duchess, has undergone significant upgrades. Kevin Wendle, the hotel’s owner and chief executive officer, and a former Hollywood producer, has incorporated advanced technologies and treatments discovered during his international travels.
The updated spa menu now includes ancient Mayan rituals like a cacao ritual and a Temazcal, a traditional hot steam bath, alongside modern biohacking technologies such as an infrared sauna, ice baths, and the sensory deprivation tank. Wendle’s approach appears successful, with 50 percent of hotel guests being repeat visitors, many drawn back by the spa enhancements.
Guests can also enjoy a variety of treatments starting with an ancestral energy cleansing ritual, followed by teas prepared from herbs grown in the hotel’s garden. The spa’s holistic experience extends to a hydrotherapy circuit featuring a sequence of treatments from a steam room, Swiss shower, hot tub, ice rub, to an infrared sauna and a cold plunge, concluded with a face and scalp massage.
Among the spa’s new technologies is the Lumenis NuEra Tight, a noninvasive skin-tightening treatment using radio frequency. The spa also offers an extensive range of services including facials, massages, nail treatments, waxing, hair cuts and styling, energetic bodywork sessions, sound healing, meditation, yoga, breathwork, and personal training.
