Review of Jil Sander Spring 2027 Fashion Show

The stark strip lighting of the show reflected the pseudo-corporate clothing that was redefined through details. These were ‘clean clothes’ that would make getting dressed for the inevitable return to the office a no-brainer. Yet, this was not a show that stayed focussed on office attire for the in-the-know, Simone Bellotti teased out more of how he hopes to author his Jil Sander era, with glimpses of true greatness in dramatic evening-wear, graphic daywear and textured shades of saccharine pastels.

THE VIBE
Today, Simone Bellotti marvelled his audience with the way his spring collection messed with convention. From the minute to the off-kilter, the back and the front, the designer is performing a soft rebellion in response to all who reduce Jil Sander down solely to minimalism. The founder herself rejected the idea and felt that she was more of a purist. By uniting the sexes through designs that were whittled down to their essence, rather than sculpted to particular body parts, making them work effortless for both men and women.
Opening in the same vein since his debut, tailoring begins the story of the season. The high cut of the men’s collar may still feel too severe a departure from where the category has been this last decade, but the collarless jackets and crease-front capris for women were a smart entryway into this new era of the brand. The moment swiftly segued into a collection of sensory simplicity, where the senses of sight and sound were especially attuned to the visual effects Belotti worked into the collection. The purposeful dishevelment, tucking, creasing, and swooping volumes worked in perfect contrast to his fall collection. That essentialism diverging into a modest form of maximalism.
Designers appear committed to moving on from the concept of ‘quiet’ clothes. With Prada incorporating one of fashions noisiest fastenings i.e. velcro, McQueen’s metal flora embellishment echoing off the church walls and Burberry’s pastel pailettes making merry melodies on the runway. Bellotti too, had his take, describing it as the uniform becoming vulnerable, and in turn vulnerability becoming uniform. In keeping with the known – and loved – design codes, while also pushing for his own handwriting to shape the brand, the designer is allowing himself to be vulnerable. Will the crumpling be understood for what it is and the skewed styling adopted as a way to personalise the impersonal? Time will be the deciding factor, but Bellotti is making all the right noises and should continue to practice what he believes is his purpose at Jil Sander, which looks to be a satisfying of the brand die-hards and an ushering in of a new more-informed generation seeking an alternative to the status quo.
THE WRAP UP
The over-exposed and the under-done are two key themes emerging from this season that is only three-quarters of the way in, but Bellotti demonstrated that whatever your particular design grounding there is room for experimentation in realms that may seem inherently opposite, but once engaged with can bring about some of the most positive results.
And for spring 2027 the designer played in the edges of the extreme to great effect. Crushing and creasing prim fabrics such as satin and disrupting fastenings with misplaced placements – this was also seen at Prada a day before. His evening wear also embraced bulbous proportions while the overall styling gave the experimentations an effortless appeal for the Jil Sander customer.
