Levi’s and Osaka Create Upcycled Denim Capsule for Summer 2021
Naomi Osaka is not only a four-time Grand Slam singles champion; she’s also a powerful young voice in the world of sports whose authenticity and willingness to stand up for important causes has helped inspire millions. In a very short time, she has become not only an iconic athlete, but a true ambassador for social change. She also has a passion for fashion design that led her to become a style icon in her own right. Levi’s is excited to partner with Naomi on a new Levi’s x Naomi Osaka collection for Summer 2021.
Working closely with the Levi’s design team, Naomi created four distinct pieces for this limited-edition collection, each made of vintage or upcycled denim, with silhouettes and design details that perfectly capture her unique mix of sporty and feminine. First up is the Denim Kimono with matching denim obi belt, a nod to her Japanese heritage.
I always loved wearing kimonos when I was a kid. So, to be able to do it in denim felt really different and a bit unexpected.

Two different styles of denim shorts feature in the collection as well. On the sportier side there’s the Lace-Up Short, a clever interpretation of the classic Levi’s denim short, with a raw hem that sits above the knee and a stylish lace-up back. Each pair of these shorts is made from an upcycled pair of men’s Levi’s jeans. And for a more feminine vibe, there’s the Crystal Fringe Short, made using vintage 501 Shorts and featuring a super short raw hem with crystal fringe draped down the outside.
Capping off the collection, there’s the denim Trucker Jacket Bustier with a lace-up back. Made from reworked Levi’s Trucker Jackets, it features the classic lines, flap pockets, and shank buttons of the iconic Type III Trucker Jacket, only in the shape and cut of a traditional corset-style bustier with a lace-up back.
I liked the idea of the bustier while I was sketching it. But I love it even more now that it’s been brought to life. It’s so cute!

It’s a collection that blends both sportiness and femininity and serves as a celebration for Naomi’s rich heritage. And with its construction from both vintage and upcycled denim, it brings new life to pre-existing Levi’s pieces resulting in less impact on the environment.
The sustainability aspect was super important to me. And I love that every piece in the collection has been recycled or repurposed from old stock.
