In the fashion world’s latest nod to innovation, Cape Town designer Lukhanyo Mdingi emerges victorious in the 2023 edition of the coveted AMIRI Prize. The selection, determined by a notable panel led by AMIRI’s founder Mike Amiri, places Mdingi at the forefront of design talent. The accolade comes with a year-long mentorship under Amiri’s guidance and a substantial grant of 100,000 USD.

Lukhanyo Mdingi’s journey began in 1992 and culminated in 2015 with the launch of his signature fashion brand in Cape Town. The essence of Mdingi’s work is rooted in collaboration with local artisans, blending their expertise with his visionary design approach. This harmonious union has not only garnered international acclaim but also elevated the local community’s rich cultural legacy and craft.

Mdingi’s distinct aesthetic and his commitment to community and culture were decisive factors in securing the AMIRI Prize. These traits, coupled with his recent collections, underscored his brand’s potential and his broader impact on fashion.
