The ongoing series brought Perkins’ time-based sculptural practice into dialogue with Métier’s design philosophy and New York’s creative community
Métier continued its New York Stories series on August 6 with an evening celebrating artist James Perkins and his sculptural practice. Held at the Brookhaven, New York, home of collectors Jay Johnson and Tom Cashin, the event featured a live installation of Perkins’ silk sculptures alongside a gathering of artists, designers, models, and members of New York’s creative community.
The evening centered on Perkins’ post-totem structures, colorful silk canvases stretched over wooden frames and buried in the earth for up to two years. During that time, the works are shaped by environmental elements including sun, sea salt, sand, soil, and wind, creating an evolving relationship between abstraction, material, and landscape.
The installation unfolded against the property’s pond and surrounding grounds, where the sculptures were presented in dialogue with the landscape. Large silver sphere-like structures were also positioned throughout the grounds, referencing the visual language of Andy Warhol’s Factory era.
The event reflected the shared emphasis on materiality and time found in Perkins’ practice and Métier’s approach to design. The brand’s New York Stories program focuses on local artists and the creative communities surrounding them, providing a platform for practices rooted in craft, place, and individual expression.
The evening also incorporated food and music as part of the installation. Daniel Emilio Soares of Alimentari Flaneur created a food presentation in the property’s gazebo, while Spanish classical guitarist Jackson Scott performed throughout the event.
Models Sara Grace Wallerstedt, Madhulika Sharma, and Sif Saga carried pieces from Métier’s Summer collection during the evening. As the event continued into the evening, guests including Elettra Wiedemann, Sophie Auster, Khiry Sullivan, and other figures from New York’s fashion and art communities gathered throughout the property.
The latest New York Stories event continues Métier’s engagement with New York’s creative landscape, using intimate gatherings and collaborations with artists to connect its design practice with the broader cultural community.
