Paris Top 12 Fall 2020 Shows

As Ranked by The Impression

The Top 12 Paris Fall 2020 Fashion Shows have started to paint a picture of what strong, powerful women will look like in the coming decade. The archetypes that take shape are less like a painting and more like a multi-media collage, or kinetic sculptures, or an immersive art installation filled with diverse and self-actualized women who are equal to men (without necessarily having to try to be like a man). These women can express their sensuality through diaphanous drapery from Sacai or liquid latex from Saint Laurent. They can adorn themselves with bejeweled symbols of power from Chanel and high-tech hardware from Off-White. They can re-appropriate the codes of “menswear” and blur into the traditionally masculine as they increasingly gain equal footing, just as men are blurring into the traditionally feminine; simultaneously these new female archetypes can maintain individuality and uniqueness side-by-side with their male counterparts, as shown on the runways of Maison Margiela, Celine, and Valentino. They can see the future in which their strength fully suffuses social power structures to the highest levels, and are ready to face every challenge with technological sophistication and empathetic intuition as envisioned by Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton and Rick Owens. Echoing the spirit of suffragists and flappers from the Roaring 20s a century ago, who ideologically were the original feminists before the term came into common parlance, the Top 12 Paris Fashion Shows indicate that the decade for true equality of the sexes starts now.
