The V&A Unpacks the Burberry Trench

The V&A display turns 170 years of archive and runway history into a study of design durability and cultural capital.

Burberry is translating one of its most recognizable products into institutional history. The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon, a free display at V&A South Kensington, will open on September 21 and run through January 3, 2027, using archival material and museum holdings to trace the coat’s progression from protective outerwear and military attire to a global fashion symbol.

Timed to Burberry’s 170th anniversary, the project gives the house a focused platform for its strongest equities: British utility, technical invention, and an object that has absorbed decades of cultural change while preserving a recognizable identity. As Burberry continues to sharpen its creative and commercial direction under Daniel Lee, the V&A context places the trench within design history and reinforces its contemporary relevance.

Located in the museum’s rarely seen Prince Consort Gallery, the display is organized around three themes: Invention, Craft, and Creativity. The opening section centers on Thomas Burberry’s development of cotton gabardine in 1879 and the fabric’s role in establishing the trench as functional outerwear with broad appeal.

The craft section isolates the coat’s defining components, including its hand-finished collar, House Check lining, storm flap, and detachable throat latch. Viewed together, those details frame the enduring product as a coherent system of functional design codes.

Creativity closes the display with 19 runway looks from the past 25 years, spanning work by Daniel Lee and Christopher Bailey. The selection positions the trench as a recurring vehicle for creative renewal across leadership eras, giving Burberry a point of continuity as its wider fashion proposition evolves.

Several objects from the Burberry Archive will receive their first public showing, among them early 20th-century catalogues and a trench coat worn by British fashion designer Hardy Amies. The mix of commercial ephemera and finished garments connects technical provenance, cultural adoption, and runway experimentation.

The institutional setting forms a significant part of the strategy. Burberry and the V&A are preparing The Burberry Gallery, scheduled to open in autumn 2028 as a major transformation of the museum’s fashion galleries. Supported by the house through a multi-year partnership, the forthcoming space will give Burberry an enduring presence within one of Britain’s most influential design institutions.

The trench display serves as an early public expression of that alliance, linking the brand’s archive with the V&A’s curatorial, educational, and conservation work. The anniversary supplies the occasion. The larger value lies in turning heritage into an accessible account of innovation, craft, and creative continuity.

The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon will be on view in the Prince Consort Gallery at V&A South Kensington from September 21, 2026, through January 3, 2027. Admission is free.
