The Conceptual Retail Space Will Also Serve as Offices, Event Space, Gallery, and Atelier
South African designer Thebe Magugu has unveiled his first retail establishment in Johannesburg, known as Magugu House. Situated on a 32,000-square-foot property in Dunkeld, the location serves as a store and venue for exhibitions and events. The house, originally built in 1931 and within the same family for three generations, now houses the brand’s offices, public spaces, and an atelier for small custom productions.
The ground floor features a showroom, fitting room, reception area, and art galleries displaying Magugu’s latest collection, including his collaboration with Valentino for U.S. Vogue. A nook in the entrance hall showcases the brand’s signature items, like the book tote designed for Dior.
Magugu, winner of the 2019 LVMH Prize for Young Designers, uses his collections to spotlight South African culture aspects. He aims for Magugu House to offer more than just clothing sales, providing enriching experiences and supporting emerging artists.
The future plans for Magugu House include hosting live sessions, art exhibitions, and possibly even a niche café in the gardens. Magugu hopes to establish similar locations globally and solidify his company’s presence abroad. He aims to maintain his own label and build a sustainable brand that can thrive independently.
