With its glass front veiled in red film, and its walls and ceiling hung with photographs, the Jil Sander Via Sant’Andrea space in Milan becomes an immersive darkroom filled with pictures capturing the Fall/Winter 2020 runway presentation and campaign, bringing together photography by Lina Scheynius, Chris Rhodes, Mario Sorrenti, Anders Edstrom, and Olivier Kervern.
Since September 2019, the Via Sant’Andrea site has been hosting temporary installations throughout the year — a fresh approach to retail space featuring pop-up projects that explore the deeply considered world conjured by Lucie and Luke Meier for Jil Sander. With this exhibition, the unique vision of each of the five photographers represents the new collection, together forming the entirety of an evocative collage of details, moments, and perspectives around the Meiers’ designs.
The diverse images are arranged in rows to form blocks of photos on the facing wall while above a suspended cloud of thousand photos curves in the air.
Lining the room’s central column, wooden vintage chairs originally used for the Fall/Winter 2020 show scenography mark a contrast to the definitive modernity of the collection’s images.
Cast in the glow of red from the windows and doors, the entire space is transformed into a darkroom gallery — a domain to explore the making of images.
