Tougher than a cloudless sky but with the same limitless possibility, steel blue is trending across Spring 2021 runway shows and fashion presentations.
The metallic tone has technical connotations in both metalworking (hence the origin of its name) and website design, and can also be found across the animal kingdom in beetles, fish, and birds. Today’s designers seem to have loftier aspirations as they incorporate variations on the color – from the restful to the electrifying – across a wide range of construction and design approaches. While we have mostly seen all-over blue steel ensembles, many designers have also combined it with other colors, particularly rusts, reds, oranges, and pinks.
Anrealge goes for maximum brightness. Boss, Bally, and Bianca Saunders experiment with its leisure-suit history. Rokh combines blue steel frills with leather boots and bondage gear for an unexpected marriage of punk dominatrix and cottage-core. Marine Serre explores its psychedelic possibilities for her signature futurewear. Dior, Accidental Cutting, and Fendi make it sheer, the latter layering steel blue over bright yellow-gold for an exquisite chromatic combination.
