Review of Balenciaga “Le City Bag” Ad Campaign by Creative Director Demna and Photographer Mario Sorrenti with models Nicole Kidman, Kate Moss, Amelia Gray and Kit Butler
Balenciaga continues its handbag campaign series with a new spotlight on its Le City bag in a series of refined and minimal portraits by photographer Mario Sorrenti.
House ambassador Nicole Kidman once again returns as the face of the campaign, and this time is joined by Kate Moss, Amelia Gray, and Kit Butler. Sorrenti captures each star before a simple gray studio backdrop, where the bag’s distinct character – marrying a slouchy nonchalance with utilitarian maximalism – complements their individual looks while exuding its own expressive personality.
On its own, the campaign might toe the line of being almost too straightforward, yet serves as a direct showcase for star handbag styles with a nice celebrity lift. As a series, however, they form a smart strategy to boost brand equity and maintain recognition around Balenciaga’s big sellers as a steady counterpoint to some of the brand’s more theatrical messaging, as for example its recent couture show.
