The designer joins a recent roster of honorees skewing toward younger, working creative directors, marking a shift back toward legacy influence
The Couture Council of the Museum at FIT will honor Diane von Furstenberg with its 2026 Couture Council Award, recognizing her transformative influence on women’s fashion since she launched her wrap dress in 1974. The designer will receive the award on October 22 at Gotham Hall in New York, during the Council’s annual luncheon benefiting the museum, the only institution in New York dedicated exclusively to the art of fashion. Couture Council board members Anne Baker and Alida Boer will co-chair the event.
Von Furstenberg’s career has moved fluidly between commercial fashion and public advocacy, a combination the Council’s honor seems designed to recognize as a single body of influence rather than two separate legacies. She served as president and later chairwoman of the CFDA between 2006 and 2019, and in 2010 established the DVF Awards with the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation to support women demonstrating leadership and resilience. Her recognition extends beyond fashion into philanthropy and civic development, including her role in restoring New York’s High Line and creating Little Island.
The Museum at FIT’s collection spans more than 50,000 garments and accessories from the 18th century to the present, giving institutional weight to an award that has, in recent years, gone to working creative directors including Olivier Rousteing, Simon Porte Jacquemus, and Maria Grazia Chiuri. Placing von Furstenberg alongside that group signals the Council’s continued interest in honoring designers whose commercial instincts and cultural presence have shaped how the industry defines lasting influence, regardless of whether that influence was built through a runway or a boardroom.
