Emilia Wickstead Designs New Staff Uniforms for Air New Zealand

Garments incorporate Māori motifs and Pacific influences; rollout set for 2026

Air New Zealand has introduced a new uniform collection designed by Emilia Wickstead, marking a shift in the airline’s approach to staff attire. Known primarily for her luxury womenswear, Wickstead’s work on the project incorporates national and cultural elements specific to New Zealand.

The new uniforms are intended for approximately 6,000 Air New Zealand employees, including flight crew and ground staff. The collection includes designs influenced by Māori and Pacific cultural traditions. Among the garments is “The Fine Print-Dress,” which features a kowhai flower motif linked to the Māori narrative of Ngatoro-i-rangi. The airline states the design represents protection, responsibility, and connection.

Another garment, “The Collective Thread-Shirt,” includes prints and a tui knot neckline and is intended for use by both on-ground and in-air staff. Other components of the collection are “The Wrap-Around” trench coat with a violet pinstripe, a vest for male employees, and le Faitaga, a piece tied to Pacific heritage. For pilots, the uniform includes a pinstripe suit with a Kiwi feather lining, chosen for its association with leadership and respect.

Hand-painted designs from Te Rangitu Netana, recognized for his work in ta moko, were integrated into the uniform print work. The collaboration between Wickstead and Netana adds another layer of cultural reference to the garments.

“For us, this is more than just a uniform; it is a celebration of our people, our culture and our values,” stated Greg Foran, Air New Zealand’s CEO. “Air New Zealand has never been about standing still or blending in. As an airline, we are all about being bold, celebrating what makes us unique and celebrating our team members. This new uniform encapsulates everything we stand for — a combination of innovation, rich cultural heritage and a sense of pride and belonging.”

Wickstead, originally from New Zealand, emphasized the personal nature of the commission. “Designing the Air New Zealand uniform has been an incredibly personal project for me. At the heart of it was a deep respect for the heritage and the unique identity of New Zealand’s people and land. It was essential to me that this uniform tells a meaningful story about Aortearoa (New Zealand). I wanted to create a uniform that empowers individuals and inspires pride in all who wear it and see it. For me, good design should always evoke a sense of pride and occasion, and I believe this uniform will do just that.”

The airline will begin onboard trials of the new uniforms in May, with feedback from staff informing any further refinements. A full rollout is scheduled to begin in 2026.
