New capsule merges tailored sophistication with the edgy spirit of British post-punk
END. and British label YMC (You Must Create) are launching their first joint collection, “Best of British,” a capsule of eight unisex pieces inspired by the sartorial impact of post-punk culture in the UK during the ‘70s and ‘80s. Unlike the raw DIY aesthetic of London’s punk scene, the Northern post-punk movement leaned toward a more refined style, merging elements of office wear, tailored knitwear, and classic shirting with subversive, industrial details.
The collaboration between END., known for curating global brands through its fashion, sneaker, and lifestyle platform, and YMC, a label celebrated for understated yet distinct designs since 1995, highlights a shared appreciation for cultural movements that resonate with contemporary style. YMC Design Director Shaun Somerville explained, “YMC and END. have worked together for many years, and our relationship thrives on a shared mindset — that clothing doesn’t exist in isolation but is part of a wider culture encompassing music, art, and design, which speaks to who we are and what we are passionate about. This capsule celebrates those inspirations.”
END.’s Senior Collaborations Design Manager Callum Hill noted that YMC has been a longstanding partner of END., aligned with its focus on UK cultural heritage and global influences. “With our collaborative capsule, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the musical culture of the UK and the style identities born out of it.”
The capsule pays homage to post-punk icons who often transitioned directly from office environments to evening gigs, creating a unique blend of utilitarian and tailored aesthetics. Key pieces include the Basement Bomber and Stoosh Cargos in striped European grey wool, bridging utility with a nod to classic tailoring. YMC’s staple Brainticket jacket has also been reinterpreted, presented in black sheepskin with suede construction and shearling lining, while the Suedehead jumper is knitted from Scottish lambswool, available in plum and black stripes.
Elsewhere in the collection, a hand-knitted wool vest with a bold wolf motif channels the post-punk spirit, while the Replacement Jean uses 13oz black denim for a rugged look. T-shirts, designed with images from British music photographer Adrian Boot, complete the line, featuring silhouettes of post-punk bands from the late ‘70s.
END., established in 2005, is a Newcastle-based retailer known for blending world-renowned brands, emerging designers, and cult labels with a community-driven approach. YMC, founded a decade earlier, takes its name from industrial designer Raymond Loewy’s quote, “You Must Create.” The brand’s designs are known for their functional yet directional approach, informed by traditional workwear and military styles.
