Though London Fashion Week went full steam ahead with the Fall 2022 season – unlike its totally cancelled Men’s Week counterpart, which would have happened last month – the shadow of the again-spiking pandemic could still be felt hanging over the week. But every viral cloud has a silver lining, and the sun shone through onto some great, and some unexpectedly great, collections. With leading brands Burberry and Alexander McQueen opting to show off calendar and Vivienne Westwood presenting digitally, eyes were turned toward the less-sung heroes of London fashion week, visiting designers like Raf Simons, and the exciting newcomers championed by Fashion East.
Featuring dancers from the English National Ballet School in lieu of models, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi matched a collection that surveyed the half-century of London’s underground art and club culture with a presentation that made it dance through the present.
Standing in contrast to the metaphisicality and eccentricity of that show, Eudon Choi’s return to the runway after a hiatus of a few seasons delivered consistently strong, no-nonsense looks for the modern woman that nonetheless were rife with color and clever details.
Erdem led the pack with its show that brought us into the heart of a 1930’s European nightclub: we can feel darkness looming, but this night is about seduction, possibility, and liberated self-expression, a nocturnal lust for life. Amongst the noise and naivety that is London Fashion Week, the designer continued to light the way for quiet yet quintessential luxury fashion.
