Temporary store opens as flagship undergoes renovations
Louis Vuitton has revealed a 240-foot-tall façade in the shape of six stacked hardsided trunks to enclose its 16-story flagship on 5th Avenue in New York City. The structure, measuring 108 by 70 feet at its base, marks the beginning of a multi-year renovation of the building, which the brand has occupied since 2004.
Paying homage to the Trianon Grey canvas from the 19th century, the façade incorporates the Monogram Flower motif for the first time. The design features signature Louis Vuitton details, including chrome-plated locks, hand-welded steel corners, and 840 rivets etched with the brand’s name. Handles, the largest weighing 5,000 pounds, were recreated using 3D scans of original Louis Vuitton trunks.
During the renovation, Louis Vuitton has opened a temporary store at 6 E. 57th Street. This location includes the U.S. debut of a Louis Vuitton café and chocolate shop, along with a capsule collection of keepsakes. The art deco-style space features a holiday carousel-themed façade with moving animal displays, surrounded by monogram-inspired lights.
Louis Vuitton has a longstanding relationship with New York, having sold products in the U.S. since 1898 and opened its first independent New York store on 57th Street in 1980.
Since 1854, Louis Vuitton has combined innovation and craftsmanship, expanding beyond its origins in luggage to include ready-to-wear, accessories, and fragrances. The brand remains committed to its heritage of fine craftsmanship and collaboration with artists and designers.
