'The Holiday Spirit' 2019 Ad Campaign

Like a saturated glittery haiku, Miu Miu’s holiday ad campaign as envisioned by Creative Directors Jean-Baptiste Talbourdet and Lolita Jacobs represents what many young people wish their seasonal festivities could be: full of sparkle and color, and getting dressed up in warm jackets and cozy sweaters with eye-catching accessories. Platforms and metallic heels might not be the wisest choice for trudging through snow, but it’s a given that young urbanites will splurge for an Uber or Lyft in any case…so they pair long coats with short skirts to arrive at their holiday parties in style.

Photographers Jean-Baptiste Talbourdet and Chris Rhodes showcase holiday items and gift-ables including scarves, jewelry, sunglasses and hand bags with just a hint of narrative. Essentially focused on the holiday parties’ before, during and after; we see a young woman in front of the vanity mirror trying on earrings and another soaking in a bubble bath, both preparing for an evening out. Then we see a couple arriving in a black leather jacket and white shearling coat, fashionably late no doubt. An embroidered Miu Miu bag is left on an end table, and at some point, silvery heels are cast off. The campaign feels easy and effortless, which is something many ads strive for and few actually achieve. In this case, the success lies in the campaign’s relative straight-forwardness; it’s not trying to be anything more than it is….beautiful people getting decked out for the holidays. And most would agree, there is no better time than the holidays to pull out all the stops, add a sprinkle of bling, and put your best foot forward.
