New Hermès Flagship Store

The new location for the French luxury house at 706 Madison Avenue is 20,250 square feet spread across four floors, with the top floor opening to a rooftop garden. The shop is actually made up of a number of salons that resemble the rooms in a house—the Hermès house, if you will. In a press release, the project’s artistic and general director Denis Montel of the architecture firm RDAI stated, “This project was almost like designing five stores into one, while always keeping a bespoke approach. There are many stories, but they are linked together. You go from one surprise to another.”

A cocktail bar beneath a massive skylight is surrounded by rare Hermès bags on display, and a smooth, curved stone staircase runs up the store along a 49-foot-high wall that serves as a vertical gallery with paintings by Antoine Carbonne and photographs with equine themes. There are also speckled terrazzo floors illuminated by traditional Grecques lights shaped like art deco skyscrapers. Even a VIP lounge and an atelier for five resident artisans from various métiers are located on the fifth floor
