Like a soft breath of spring, pastel colors are blooming on the runways of Spring 2022. At once soothing and uplifting, pastel colors seem ripe to give us the focus and fun we need to make a graceful return to the flow of real life. Designers seem tuned in to this moment of rebirth, and this season’s return to in-person shows saw them explore plenty of pastel possibilities.
Loewe embraced the surreal with a visionary, sculptural collection that made fantastical use of pastel pinks, blues, greens, and more. Marine Serre subtly incorporated pastel into her psychedelic upcycled exploration of materiality and movement. Prada explored pastel colors as one element in its brilliant de- and reconstruction of femininity. Shang Xia and Jil Sander both proved that playful pastels can still have a place in minimalism.
