Is denim experiencing a renaissance? Or is it just now finally being accepted as an indispensible material (even though in reality, it has been for decades)?
These questions are debatable, but it seems obvious that luxury brands have finally embraced denim as a medium worthy of being explored and exploited. Subsequently denim has moved into the realm of high luxury with campaigns from Saint Laurent, Lanvin, and perhaps most strikingly, its prominent display at the Givenchy Spring 2020 runway show – where faded, ripped-up denim marched down the isle paired with jackets, blouses and prints. What makes this noteworthy is its reflection of how people wear clothes in the real world, perhaps an indication that even the most high-end customers don’t want to appear too bourgeois as they’re traipsing around the globe and lounging in exotic locales. Now that denim has moved up in the world, denim staples such as Levi’s and Calvin Klein will get a run for their money and will have to content with potentially more sophisticated competitors such as Celine, Iro, and Polo Ralph Lauren. Let the games begin!
