From a classic Michael Kors collection to mainstays like Altuzarra, Gabriela Hearst, and Proenza Schouler quietly continuing to evolve their place at the forefront of American fashion, the Fall 2024 season from New York was from some perspectives a subdued affair – but closer looks reveal that the city’s sense of inventiveness and innovation is alive and thriving.
One of the most anticipated – and best – shows of the season was actually from a visiting Parisian brand, but Ludovic de Saint Sernin did New York proud with his collection that steadily leveled up his vision of slinky seduction and paid work to the legacy of legendary photographer and queer icon Robert Mapplethorpe.
With a show that arrived just after her brand’s 20th anniversary, Tory Burch led the pack and served up a collection that had “sublime” aspirations and continued her (by her own standards) experimental kick, broadening an established idea of what luxury empowerment for the American woman can look like.
