The Costume Institute’s 2027 exhibition examines how designers transform familiar garments and everyday materials.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday as its spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, examining how designers transform familiar garments and commonplace materials.
Organized by curator in charge Andrew Bolton, the exhibition will feature approximately 200 to 230 pieces. Two principal sections, Familiar Forms and Common Matter, will explore reinterpretations of wardrobe staples—including jeans, T-shirts and trench coats—and the use of materials such as paper, plastic and aluminum in clothing.
Designers represented will include Jun Takahashi, Martin Margiela, Virgil Abloh and Matthieu Blazy. The exhibition will consider craftsmanship, reuse and the ways materials acquire value through design.
The new exhibition replaces a planned show dedicated to John Galliano, which was cancelled following objections over the designer’s past antisemitic remarks.
The Met Gala will take place on May 3, 2027, ahead of the exhibition’s public opening on May 9. The show will remain on view through January 9, 2028. The gala’s dress code and celebrity co-chairs have not yet been announced.
Instagram will sponsor the exhibition, with major funding from Moncler and additional support from Condé Nast.
