Event Marks Brand’s Continued Commitment to China Amid Search for New Creative Director
Chanel is preparing to present its next Métiers d’Art collection on December 3 in Hangzhou, China, highlighting the brand’s commitment to its show schedule amidst the search for a new creative director.
Hangzhou, often referred to as Paradise on Earth, is a major economic and e-commerce center, known for its West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also a key location for silk production.
The decision to host the show in Hangzhou underscores Chanel’s focus on China, especially during a period of slowed luxury spending. This event also coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France.
Chanel will also showcase its Cruise 2025 collection in Hong Kong on November 5.
The last Métiers d’Art presentation in China was in 2009, designed by Karl Lagerfeld and held in Shanghai. Plans to restage the show in Beijing in 2020 were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Fashion and President of Chanel SAS, explained that Hangzhou was chosen due to its connection to Coromandel lacquer screens in Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s Paris apartment, calling it an inspirational location for the Métiers d’Art collection.
The forthcoming collection will be designed by Chanel’s in-house team following the departure of creative director Virginie Viard. A successor is expected to be named soon. The Métiers d’Art line has been showcased in various cities worldwide, emphasizing the specialty ateliers under Chanel’s Paraffection subsidiary.
