Review of Dior Men Fall 2024 Ad Campaign by Art Director Ronnie Cooke-Newhouse with Photographer Alasdair McLellan and models Dugyeong Kim, Lars Post, Muzakir Masahudu, Till Wenner, and Trystan Ricketts
Dior’s Fall 2024 men’s campaign is on point(e). Drawing inspiration from the world of dance, the campaign features art direction from Ronnie Cooke-Newhouse and photography by Alasdair McLellan.
Ballet flats may still be a majorly trending accessory in womenswear, but Kim Jones explored their possibilities in the menswear space with his collection that investigated references from the world of dance as it dug into Christian Dior’s iconic design archive.
The campaign carries this theme forward through a strong use of setting: namely, a ballet studio. Wood floors, mirrored walls, and the barre will of course remind viewers Degas’ iconic paintings of young ballerinas at work, but McLellan’s photographic perspective in conversation with the styling proposes a very distinct perspective on contemporary masculinity.
While the casting and portrait approach is strong, it does, however, feel a bit safe and familiar. It could have been really exciting to see the brand partner with real ballet dancers, incorporating a stronger and more genuine sense of movement and the craft of dance into the campaign’s visual narrative.
Nonetheless, the imagery is soulful and striking, and just having well-dressed men in a space that is still culturally very associated with femininity makes for a big impact on its own. Bravo!
