When Nature Meets The Rave

By Obi Anyanwu

A seasonal standout—Dries Van Noten never disappoints with his new offerings and Fall/Winter 2023 is no different.

The Belgian designer is one of few this season to take over a parking garage to present their latest collection. Guests ascended three floors to a fusion of 90s underground dance music and jazz orchestrated by Belgian musicians Lander & Adriaan.

The music informed much of the collection as well. The dark and moody outfits expected of a 90’s rave set a tone, exhibited Dries Van Noten’s steady hand and strong eye for tailoring and outerwear on long single-breasted coats, extra wide v-neck sweater paired with very long high-waisted trousers and edgy triple belt, and double breasted blazer with gloves.

But the dark and somber looks were offset by an earthy color story of khaki and camel tones on textured knitwear and luxurious outerwear like a long double breasted coat in brown and a peacoat with an embellished pattern, as well as muted pastel shades on a four-pocket parka and patterned styles.

Aside from the musical references, the designer also looked to works by German naturalist and geographer Alexander von Humboldt and drawings of Meise Botanic Garden in Belgium. He looked to natural environments, referenced by the earth tones, flora and fauna represented by a vibrant blue and cream patterned down parka, floral patterned pants and one pink, vibrant fauna-inspired coach jacket.
