Characterized by relaxed suiting and layering, the Fall 2023 menswear shows from the big houses took a somewhat more conservative and accessible approach, perhaps taking into consideration forecasts for a year of recession and opting to offer style essentials that can be worn and loved for a lifetime. Still, the season wasn’t without its surprises and moments of fun: JW Anderson stripped down for a pointedly surreal statement, while Dsquared2 piled on the layers in celebration of 25 years of its signature gonzo mashup style. Prada takes home the top spot with a rigorous and reductionist collection that showed an analytic – but still not unimaginative – side of the brand and applied its designers’ keen intellect to shed light on and tease apart our notions of category and identity.
