Sarah Burton appointed as Givenchy’s new creative director
In a major development for the fashion industry, Givenchy has officially announced the appointment of Sarah Burton as its new Creative Director, effective immediately. Burton, who is widely recognized for her transformative leadership at Alexander McQueen, will now oversee the creative direction for both men’s and women’s collections at Givenchy.
“I am incredibly honored to join the beautiful house of Givenchy, a true jewel in the fashion world,” Burton said in her official statement. “It’s an exciting opportunity to write the next chapter of this iconic house and bring my own vision, sensibility, and beliefs to its future.”
Burton’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for the storied Maison. She steps into a role previously held by designers like Riccardo Tisci and Clare Waight Keller, who left indelible marks on the brand. Burton’s work at Alexander McQueen, including designing HRH the Princess of Wales’s wedding dress in 2011, has solidified her reputation as one of the most innovative minds in fashion.
Leadership Excitement
Sidney Toledano, Chairman of the Givenchy board, expressed enthusiasm over the appointment, stating, “Sarah Burton is an exceptional creative talent whose work I have followed passionately for many years. Her vision and approach to fashion are invaluable to a Maison like Givenchy, known for its audacity and haute couture. I am confident her leadership will further elevate the brand’s success on the global stage.”
Alessandro Valenti, CEO of Givenchy, added, “Sarah’s arrival is an exciting moment for Givenchy. Her remarkable career path and vision have won her a vast fan base, and we are certain that she will continue to innovate and captivate audiences around the world. I look forward to the new creative energy she will bring.”
Burton will present her debut collection for Givenchy in March 2025, marking a fresh creative direction for the fashion house.
A Storied Career
Hailing from Macclesfield and educated in Manchester, Burton graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 1997. She began her career at Alexander McQueen in 1996 and was appointed Head of Design in 2000 under Lee Alexander McQueen. After McQueen’s passing in 2010, Burton was named Creative Director, a role in which she achieved both critical and commercial success.
In addition to her numerous accolades, Burton was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2012 for her services to the British fashion industry. In December 2023, she was honored with the Special Recognition Award at The Fashion Awards for her outstanding contributions to fashion.
Given her remarkable history, all eyes will be on Burton as she embarks on this new chapter, steering Givenchy toward its next era of luxury innovation.
