Sean Suen Explores Gender and Sartorial Archetypes in Paris Men’s Fashion Week

Inspired by Mei Lanfang, Sean Suen showcased a collection that delved into the themes of gender and traditional sartorial styles at Paris Men’s Fashion Week. Drawing from Lanfang’s portrayal of female characters in Peking Opera, Suen combined tailored formalwear with flowing silhouettes in a color palette of cream, pearl gray, and black, accented with saffron yellow, cinnabar red, and green.

Suen’s collection raised questions about modern concepts of masculinity influenced by Western and Chinese fashion sensibilities. His precise yet relaxed tailoring was evident in slimline dinner jackets with mandarin collars, tailored trousers with silk cuffs, and layered jackets and shirts exuding a youthful vibe.

The designer creatively used ties as sashes and fringing, even grouping them to create unique plastrons with tassels. Pearls, both as closures and accessories, enhanced the collection with a touch of charm, reflecting the growing trend of men’s jewelry. Backstage, Suen showcased images of Mei Lanfang, highlighting his blend of masculine and feminine elements both on and off stage.
