While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there are certainly better and worse ways to create a beauty ad campaign. It’s easy for big brands to cast conventionally beautiful people, but it’s much more of a challenge to create a visual and narrative world around them that can actually pull us in and find genuine personality and meaning behind physical beauty.

This season, beauty was in the nose of the beholder as well – strong fragrance campaigns lead our list. From the floral power pop of Gucci’s Flora campaign (which introduced us to anime Miley Cyrus) to an intense performance from the hunky Adam Driver that anchored Burberry’s Hero campaign, these campaigns impressed us with the imaginativeness that accompanied their visual strength.

The film for Le Snob’s collaboration with Rosine Perfume rose above a typical fragrance campaign through the cohesion and strength of its imagery and the sharp yet subtle focus of its narrative. The creative team was smart to use the platform and typical approach of a fragrance campaign as a launchpad for a deeper exploration of emotional narrative and visual storytelling.
