Review of Chanel Fall 2021 Ambassadors Program Ad Campaign by Chanel Creative Director Virginie Viard with Photographers Inez & Vinoodh 

Prior to its recent Fall 2021 show, Chanel teased out a personal and playful campaign with the house’s exciting community of ambassadors anxiously awaiting the digital runway event. Chanel creative director Virginie Viard oversaw the project, with photography by duo Inez and Vinoodh.

The campaign stars a group of brand ambassadors and friends of the house who were invited to watch Chanel’s Fall 2021 runway show together. The short film celebrates the (virtual) togetherness and anticipation of waiting for the show to begin, and gives us a fun window into the personalities of these exciting creative figures. Its soundtrack, which remixes affirmations from a self-help audio book, is an excellent choice to support the freedom of self-expression embodied in the cast.

Inez and Vinoodh’s series of portraits continue this celebration of personality, drawing a strong sense of character out of each subject. The black-and-white images are finished off with a bold red signature from each star.

The campaign follows in the footsteps of similar recent campaigns from Gap, Dsquared2, and Calvin Klein, which brought together diverse talents for a celebration of both individuality and togetherness.

What is unique is how Chanel is leveraging every touchpoint to market and to maximize a strength, their show.

Shows draw a huge amount of earned media via PR support and word-of-mouth pass alongs on social. Spending energy to make one’s strength stronger is a wise move and one here at The Impression that we applaud.

The success of these campaigns depends on the creative team’s ability to draw out what is unique and inspiring about each talent, and to make us as an audience feel like we can be a part of this global community of creatives. Between the film’s relatable, carefree video-conference format, sparkling with personality, and Inez and Vinoodh’s soulful portraiture, this newest campaign from Chanel delivers in spades.
