Marni and Erykah Badu celebrate personal expression and the uniting power of music with a new campaign in celebration of their collaborative capsule. The campaign was shot by photographer Sergio Cattivelli, with art direction from Badu herself.
A fixture on the fashion circuit, Erykah Badu is recognizable for her expressive and strong style, which is rarely without a signature tall hat. Together with Marni creative director Francesco Risso, the musician created a capsule full of eccentric and expressive knitwear and tailoring, as well as individualistically maximal accessories, and of course big hats.
Keeping things personal, the campaign was shot in Badu’s hometown of Dallas, Texas, and stars both Badu and her daughter Puma Curry. Captured at a simple community church, the imagery channels the vibrancy and optimism of gospel music as its cast explores and plays throughout the space, while the small detail of stained-glass windows echoes the colorblocking of the designs. Cattivelli’s images feel dynamic, reflective, and direct; one in particular that makes use of double exposure to be both inside and outside at once feels especially potent.
Exploring both the personal and artistic meaning behind the unique collaboration, the campaign is a soulful and vibrant statement of creative community.
