The Designer and His Studio SR_A Are Set to Launch an Immersive Art Project at the Upcoming Milan Design Week
Designer Samuel Ross, via his industrial design studio SR_A, is preparing to introduce Transposition, a new immersive sculptural environment installation. The work is in collaboration with Scotch whisky maker The Balvenie and is set to premiere at Milan Design Week on April 8.
Transposition has been described as a fusion of different disciplines including fashion, industrial design, and fine art. The site-specific project showcases elevated copper sculptures designed to incarnate the artistry of distillation.
The Balvenie contextualizes this installation as a link between their heritage of unique craft practices handed down through generations and a modern aesthetic. The installation seeks to offer an experience which could redefine the intersection of hospitality and design.
Ross explains, “Transposition is a collision between two worlds. Between the elements and the man-made. Between craft and industry. The works, and sculptural environment of Transposition, will change your relationship with what you are tasting on site.”
As part of the exhibition, a copper bar will be serving The Balvenie whiskies during the opening hours.
Ross’ versatility and talent across multiple design domains has been exhibited over the years. With an expansive resume crafting everything from perfume bottles to faucets, Ross has heavily concentrated on further developing his industrial design skills since the sale of his conceptual streetwear brand, A Cold Wall.
Accomplishments include his noteworthy presence at Design Miami/ Paris with his vibrant yellow Caucus Park bench. He maintained his design momentum at Milan Design Week, setting a precedent with a ground-breaking collaboration with U.S. kitchen and bath firm Kohler. For this project, Ross made an inventive alteration to a key fixture – the humble toilet.
Ross’ bold innovations weren’t limited to design alone. He also ventured into a novel fashion model not reliant on wholesale through a long-term partnership with Zara. His inaugural collection for Zara was launched in the early part of the current year in Paris.
