Review of Alexander Wang Year of the Dragon 2024 Capsule

Alexander Wang welcomes the Year of the Dragon with a new capsule that celebrates Lunar New Year 2024 with sparkling style.

The intimate lookbook imagery lets the playful spirit of Alexander Wang’s take on the Year of the Dragon come to the fore. The collection sees an intriguing textural interplay of vintage-minded leather pieces and mid-2000s velvet loungewear, all illuminated with bedazzled dragon motifs.

Though the lookbook imagery is effective in communicating the character of the capsule, not sharing a full campaign may be something of a missed opportunity for the brand, especially considering how we have seen others use the opportunity of the holiday – which has huge cultural significance in China and other east Asian countries – to share unique celebrations of cultural exchange and to platform artists with cultural connections to it.

That being said, the collection itself does bring a perspective to the holiday iconography that we haven’t seen before, balancing nostalgia, glamor, and low-key layering for a fun twist on a familiar celebration.
