SCAD MOA Honors Isabel Toledo with Posthumous Exhibition

SCAD MOA Celebrates the Timeless Legacy of Isabel Toledo with a New Exhibition

In a heartfelt tribute to one of fashion’s most innovative figures, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has unveiled a new exhibition, “Isabel Toledo: A Love Letter,” at the SCAD Museum of Art (MOA) in Savannah, Georgia. Opening on August 14, 2024, the exhibition is a collaboration between SCAD FASH creative director Rafael Gomes and Isabel’s husband and artistic partner, Ruben Toledo. This marks the first posthumous exhibition of Isabel Toledo’s work in the U.S.

The exhibition highlights the designer’s unparalleled expertise in garment construction, technique, and textiles, presenting nearly 40 signature pieces from Isabel’s personal archive. Complementing these creations are illustrations by Ruben Toledo, offering visitors a deeply personal look into their lifelong creative partnership.

Celebrating an Icon

Isabel Toledo’s designs, renowned for their impeccable craft and emotional resonance, transcended trends, making her a revered figure in the fashion world. Known as a “designer’s designer,” Toledo focused on the art of creation rather than the limelight, remaining steadfast in her devotion to her craft. The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to view never-before-seen garments that underscore her lasting impact on the industry.

In addition to the garments and illustrations, the exhibition features the SCAD-produced film, Echoes and Vibrations, which documents the enduring love story between Isabel and Ruben Toledo. The exhibition is a celebration of their creative synergy and the indelible mark Isabel left on fashion.

SCAD’s Ongoing Connection to the Toledos

The relationship between SCAD and the Toledos has deep roots. In 2009, the university honored the couple with the André Leon Talley Award for their exceptional contributions to art and design. The first iteration of “A Love Letter” debuted at SCAD FASH Lacoste in Provence in 2022, marking Isabel’s first posthumous exhibition internationally and her first presentation in France.

The upcoming exhibition at SCAD MOA will be showcased in the André Leon Talley Gallery, further cementing Isabel’s enduring legacy in the art and fashion worlds. Rafael Gomes, SCAD FASH creative director, hopes that the exhibition will inspire SCAD students to explore new ideas through the lens of Isabel’s groundbreaking work.

A Public Reception for the Ages

On September 26, 2024, SCAD MOA will host a public reception celebrating the opening of its fall exhibitions, including “Isabel Toledo: A Love Letter.” Ruben Toledo will be present, along with other renowned contemporary artists, giving students and the public a chance to engage directly with these creative minds.

The exhibition will be on view through December 26, 2024, offering an extended opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the world of Isabel Toledo—a world defined by love, artistry, and innovation.
